I was inspired by @markbroch to post on one of my I was inspired by @markbroch to post on one of my guilty pleasures: luxuriant Dutch gilded embossed leather wall hangings from the 17th century. These non-vegan beauties, hanging in a devoted space in the Lakenhal in Leiden, are doubly special as they're executed with a rather - though not pure - auricular motif, peculiar to that time and place. Not gothic, not baroque, certainly not Renaissance... auricular, a style brimming with hints of cartilage, mollusks, flesh, decay, and a general lobe-iness, was a bit of a flash in the pan around the middle of the 17th century, before everything went so puritanically classical. It had grown out of the mannerist cartouche tradition and found sway among brilliant silversmiths around the Republic. The gilded leather hangings were probably not terribly rare in their time, but no single example still hangs in its original location.

I went in the direction of design, and now that I'm working on the computer all day I long for working with my hands. I think it might be who I really am.
Roman wall paintings from various eras, uncovered Roman wall paintings from various eras, uncovered at Pompeii, were still in reasonably good shape when Antonio Niccolini, the architect and scenographer, first published the great overview on the subject. Many of the uncovered houses have been left open to the elements and a number of the great frescos are now a crumbled reminder of what they once were. Still, the ones that remain surprise us with their vibrance. Niccolini's volumes on Pompeii had a huge influence on decorative styles in Europe, even after the Empire taste had faded. A bit "hors concours" but here's some recent set p A bit "hors concours" but here's some recent set painting I've done. It's not my usual business anymore, but the subject, a Roman fresco, tickled my history bone and having by chance a very enthusiastic student assistant at my disposal from the film academy, it seemed a shame to turn it down, at least from the pedagogical point of view. A popular history series will be filming the story of the Roman era Netherlands in September and the point of departure is a group of original fresco fragments found among the archeological remains of a Roman villa in Limburg (pic 3). We didn't have the resources to create an exact version of the artifact, so we tried to capture it at least in spirit. We also had to conjecture as to the original context and what kind of decorations a late empire villa in "Gallia Belgica" might have had. Unfortunately most of the inspiration for Roman painting is from southern Italy dating before AD 79, the eruption of Vesuvius and is very rich and cosmopolitan, whereas we tried a little bit to imagine what it would have looked like in the provinces. And who was this - probably itinerant - artist who created this delicate sensitive face?

The exhibition is a response to Leiden's touted "Pilgrim Year" from the point of view of the indigenous nations who then and now inhabit North America. Contemporary expressions of the indigenous experience are presented in two long galleries along side collection from the museum, with accents on resistance and self determination. In spite of the misery that the French inflicted o In spite of the misery that the French inflicted on the Lowlands at the end of the 17th century, the Dutch did love their Louis. Even a quarter century after the death of Louis XIV they were still freely improvising on his famous style, long after it had been succeeded in France by new inventions. The stone facade of De Bruinvis ("The Porpoise") in Monnickendam must have cost a fortune, so the design probably reflected a small town merchant's idea of wealth as seen in the big city.
