brief artist bio

Todd van Hulzen comes from a family of Dutch Reformed cowboy-rancher-farmers in the Western U.S. He studied history and art in Portland, Oregon (Lewis & Clark College.) After living in diverse cities such as Amsterdam, Rome, Montreal and New York, he chose Amsterdam to settle permanently, citing its rich artistic history and progressive atmosphere. He returns yearly to Klamath County, Oregon to work on the family ranch and build his cabin.

Todd began his career as a decorative painter for interiors and cinema. He then moved on to sculpture (original masks for Lion King on Broadway, i.a.) Later he established himself as a designer of film sets, with as a specialty “period” architecture and design. As Art-Director/Set-Designer Todd designed film sets for the Oscar nominated films Girl with a Pearl Earring and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Some award winning Dutch productions were Bloed, zweet en tranen, Michiel de Ruyter en de western Brimstone. He’s worked on 5 films of the British director Peter Greenaway. More recently he has turned towards the museum world as an exhibition designer, known for his “scenographic” approach with designs for the Dutch National Archives, the Mauritshuis, the National Ethnological Museum, the Navy Museum, NEMO Science Center, and more.

Recently he has been concentrating more energy on his own personal work as a fine artist, aiming to distill a vision out of his many disparate fields, skills, philosophies and interests. Some of the elements that shine through his work are his interest in the history of architecture, classical mythology, epic poetry, and the sad destruction of nature around us. The dilemma is thus: we humans need to create order from chaos, yet we bring chaos and destruction to the world and we believe ourselves superior to our forebears. Meanwhile Nature is unknowable. Confronting this hubris is central to Todd’s thinking.
